Smoke Break the Documentary
Logline: "In the military, 'taking a smoke break' offers rare moments of camaraderie and respite - but for millions of veterans, this cultural ritual becomes a lifelong health battle."
The Project
"Smoke Break" is a 10-minute documentary that explores the complex relationship between military service and tobacco use. As a veteran-created film, it examines how a seemingly simple ritual becomes deeply intertwined with veteran identity and health long after service ends.
Our Approach
Rather than delivering a simplistic anti-smoking message, this documentary honors the nuanced reality of why veterans smoke and what tobacco represents within military culture. Through authentic conversations and thoughtful visuals, we'll transform the imagery of smoke itself – from a symbol of connection to a potential barrier between veterans and their futures.
Who We're Following
The film centers on veterans at different stages of their relationship with tobacco:
- Those who continue to smoke and find meaning in the ritual
- Those struggling with the quitting process
- Those who have successfully redefined their relationship with this aspect of military culture
Why This Matters
With veterans smoking at significantly higher rates than civilians, this issue impacts hundreds of thousands of lives. Yet few resources address the unique cultural factors that make quitting particularly challenging for those who served. By sharing these stories, we create space for honest conversation about veteran health and identity.
