Logline: When scientists, pharmaceutical executives, environmental lawyers, and citizen volunteers all hit separate walls trying to protect one of Earth's oldest animals, they found each other. This is the story of what happened next.
Summary: For 450 million years, horseshoe crabs have survived everything the planet could throw at them. In the last few decades, human harvesting, for bait and for their medically invaluable blue blood, has pushed Atlantic populations into serious decline. The Coalition follows the Horseshoe Crab Recovery
Coalition and its unlikely partners: biologists counting eggs on Delaware Bay beaches at midnight, a Eli Lilly executive who called the bleeding process unsustainable from inside the industry, Wall Street investors who stumbled onto red knots through a newspaper article, and the researchers racing to prove that a synthetic alternative can replace horseshoe crab blood in the pharmaceutical testing that keeps our medicines safe.
Filming is complete. The film is currently in post-production for an anticipated September 2025 festival premiere.
Feature film in development: A feature-length follow-up is in development, expanding the story to Singapore, Brazil, and inside the blood labs themselves, asking the question: now that a synthetic alternative exists, what comes next for the industry that saved millions of lives using these animals for 40 years?
